[00:00:00] I recently worked with an author who is an expert in their field. Having spent decades studying a specific subject. However, the book they wanted to write was not the book they had written. They knew their general audience, the demographics, age range , socioeconomic status, and many other things that created a reader persona but they needed to include the most important ingredient. A precise understanding of their readers challenge.
I'm Zach Kristensen, and this is Beyond the book presented by Juxta book.
the one thing authors absolutely must grasp is this. You need to understand what your reader is looking to overcome. What's their challenge and how are they going to go about looking for a solution? All the other items are [00:01:00] secondary. Once that is clearly understood. The next step is to articulate how you as the author are their solution to that problem.
Your future readers may not know the solution yet, and they might not fully understand the solution you provide. But identifying their problem and providing a specific solution is key. Too many authors make the mistake of claiming their book is for everyone. Making targeting difficult. So focus on a specific problem and provide a targeted solution.
It's tough work, but authors who put in the time to know their reader's problems and provide a clear solution. Have an easier time developing and marketing their book than those who don't. ~If you're not creating clarity for your readers, you're likely creating confusion. Regardless of genre or subject. ~
If you're not creating clarity for your readers, you're likely causing confusion. Going back to the author I mentioned at the beginning. Our first recommendation to them was to get clear on their audience and understand whether their book is for high achievers. The lay person [00:02:00] or someone else, if it's for everyone, they will face an uphill battle and make their book resonate with those that pick it up and read it.
One possible solution we suggested was to create two bucks. Each book would target a different audience segments and serve different purposes for their goals. As an author the more clear you are, the more precise you are, and the more you understand what you've created. It'll be even easier for your audience to understand.
If you don't understand it, they won't understand it. ~So take the time. ~
